Chapter one
Part 1:
And there I was.
Under water.
I was gliding swiftly in the ocean, looking at marvelous sea creatures that I’ve never seen before. Then, I noticed something that was completely new to me-I wasn’t Sapphire Pilbourne anymore.
I was a dragon.
Her eye’s opened, her mind clicked back to reality. It was nothing but a dream. A weird one she thought. Sapphire got out of bed and changed her clothes into an orange crop top and black joggers. She pulled back the curtains to greet the blinding sun at her window. Warmth flooded the cold, silent room. Sapphire was about 6 ft. tall and had a lot of curves for a young woman. Her skin was lightly tanned, a shade of olive and her wavy hair was blood red. She was seventeen years old living with her mother, her father was murdered in Washington State so they moved to Florida as far away as possible to start a new life so they didn’t have to be haunted by the memories. But Sapphire still had vengeance in her heart. Who was her father’s murderer? She remembered the last time she spoke to him.
They were at a restaurant, Joe’s Crab Shack, while her mom was at work. When they settled in their seats, her father was the first to speak something out of the ordinary. “I am giving you this because I trust you. Don’t show your mother, alright? Things will make a lot more sense when you get older.” He took out a necklace from his coat pocket and placed it gently in her small but soft eager hands. The necklace was like no other, it was made by a craftsman, it had deep and narrow designs. The necklace had a small oval on it with a black dot in the middle and hash markings it. Sapphire placed it in her pocket staring at her father with curiosity.
It had been four years and the pain of her father being lost forever was in still in her heart. The time had come for her to know the truth about her father’s death. She went into the bathroom and stared at herself in the mirror. Sapphire had tons of criminal books on her bookshelf and had tons of interviews with the victims but had gotten nowhere with the case She picked up her brush to comb her hair - something caught her eye. It was nothing around her. It was something on her. Sapphire pulled up her sleeve and saw a blue and white rhythmic pattern of a dragon. She was upset, did her mother tattoo her while she was asleep? No, that couldn’t be the case since she was gone. Sapphire tried picking it off, it wouldn’t work. . So she did tattoo me- she thought. Sapphire went to her cabinet. She froze, still as a mouse because in the mirror, she saw a boy with charcoal eyes staring at her. She tried not to scream. She quickly turned herself around. He was not there anymore. How could that be? She tried to calm herself down but couldn’t. Who was he? How did he get in her house? She rushed back to her room to rethink everything all over again. How could this be? Her mother locked all the doors last night before she went to work. It was very strange for Sapphire because this was the same events that she went through in her… in her… in her dreams! All this time for the past 4 years she has been dreaming this. Now it’s time to find out why that is.
. . .
Time passed by like lightning. It was 3 in the afternoon. She was in her room trying to concentrate in her criminal book, How To Detect When Someone Is Lying. Almost time for her mother to return home. Sapphire tried to switch gears in her mind in order to stop repeating the scene in the bathroom over and over again. She massaged her temples to stop the pounding. The doorbell rang. Her mom was supposed to bring her homework from school since she didn’t go for the past 2 weeks of un packing and shipping stuff over here from there old house.
“Coming!”
Sapphire dashed down the steps, ran down the hall and yanked the door opened, out of breath.
“Hey, did you bring back my textbooks fro-”
She couldn’t believe who was standing right in front of her. It was the same guy who was in her mirror early this morning. She screamed in his face, “Get the hell away from me!” Slammed the door, and locked it. She ran up the steps, two at a time. She scrammed in the room and hid in her closet. Sapphire pulled out her phone and dialed 911 but her phone died instantly. She smashed her power button repeatedly, but no luck. Sapphire kept seeing the screen flash then powered off.
Then she remembered that her phone charger was on her night table, next to her Diary. Shoot, she thought. Sapphire’s whole body began to tingle. This is reality. She jumped and bumped her head on the shoe shelf when the lights went out. Sapphire’s head ached badly. She felt as if her heart was going to give out. Why is he here? She thought. Footsteps were instantly in her room. All she heard was muffled sounds of shoes on her carpet and the pounding of her heart beating faster and faster. The sound of movement were coming closer and closer to the closet door. She held her breath as long as she could. It felt like forever. Why is he still here? And another question was nagging her head, was that sniffling she heard? But, then felt a light breeze under the door. Then he was gone without closing the door and left no trace of entering and exiting, that’s what she heard. She waited for a very long time in the closet, she sat there, making sure the he was completely out of the house. Then let out a long sigh. When she got out of the closet she rushed to the window to see if he was gone. When she got the chance to sigh again she heard a voice from behind her.
“You, my girl, are clever, but not clever enough.”
Sapphire spun around. While doing so, she knocked over her book shelf. They all began tumbling down, clattering down on the carpet. That voice, she heard it before. The boy looked about her age but a little older. He had a black coat and had dark brown hair. His facial features reminded her of someone else, she can’t remember.
“Who are you and why did you come in my house?” Her voice sounded very demanding but the look on her face was the complete opposite, “ I told you to get the hell away from me or I will call the cops.”
The boy put his left hand to his temple.
“Look Sapphire-”
“How do you know my name?” she was puzzled.
“I knew you a very long time ago.”He replied as if he was making a fair statement. What could he want? She’s got to get a way out of this mess, but how? Think, she told herself. But she couldn’t think straight. Her heart's pounding run, run literally, while her mind is saying stay, stay and reason. He interrupted her thoughts.
“That was very rude of you to scream in my face down stairs a while ago. But, me having a kind heart, I forgive you.”
“You? Kind heart? Ha! Why are here? I’m not going to ask you again . LEAVE.”Sapphire said crossing her arms.
He put his hand on his chin stroking softly walking closer and closer to her.
“I know, but, when I leave you’re coming with me.”
And at that moment, she braced herself, this is it, she thought. Sapphire bolted for the door and flew past him in a blink of an eye. As soon as she touched the doorknob, something hit her head hard. She crashed down to the floor curled her knees to her face to calm her down but, Her world became dark.
